Dr Belinda Bunn qualified as a dentist from the University of the Witwatersrand in 2002 (with distinction). Coincidentally, this is where she met and later married her Prosthodontist husband Dr Nelson Fernandes. They were blessed to have celebrated their twentieth wedding anniversary in September last year. Dr Bunn completed her Community Service in Ermelo after which she worked in private practice in Fourways for four years. She then specialised as an Oral and Maxillofacial Pathologist at the University of the Witwatersrand from 2007 to 2011 acquiring both an MDent in Oral Pathology as well as a Fellowship in the College of Pathology (FC Path (SA) Oral). Dr Bunn worked as a consultant pathologist and lecturer at the University of Pretoria for eight years where she was promoted to the position of Head Clinical Unit of the Department of Oral Pathology, Oral Biology and Radiology. She was appointed as the Head of Department (Department of Oral Pathology, Oral Biology and Oral Microbiology) at the Oral and Dental Teaching Hospital of Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University from 2019 to 2022. Serious unanticipated health issues resulted in Dr Bunn taking time out to recover, however, she continued to work on a sessional basis in a research capacity at SMU. Her main research areas of interest include HIV/AIDS pathology, Salivary gland neoplasms, Oral Cancer and Odontogenic neoplasms. Dr Bunn has recently been appointed as a full-time Senior Consultant Head and Neck Pathologist for the NHLS at the University of the Witwatersrand where she intends to enrol for a PhD in the near future.
