Dr Johann Schoeman is proud to refer to his upbringing in the Northern Cape province where his roots run deep in the red dunes of the Kalahari. It is in this region where he learned to make the best with what his hands could find and where he developed a love for creating something out of nothing and to serve those who needed more than what their circumstances would offer.
Dentistry pathed the way in which he could utilise his exceptional hand skills and three-dimensional thinking to change people’s lives in a way he could never imagine.
He completed his B.Ch.D degree in 2004 at the University of Stellenbosch and was one of the top students in his class in the field of prosthodontics. He was privileged to be accepted as a community service dentist at the area military base, Potchefstroom, where he continued to hone his newly acquired skills in an environment that demanded perfection. In 2006, he enrolled as a postgraduate student at the University of Pretoria where he successfully completed a diploma in prosthodontics and a post-graduate qualification in the field of implantology.
Dr Schoeman soon fell in love with the city of Potchefstroom where he was able to find a balance between dentistry and his other passion, sport! Needless to say, his sporting achievements out ways even his most prestigious dental accolades. In his words: “To excel in sport you need dedication, perseverance, and passion! These are all attributes I bring to my practice when treating my patients”.
Dentistry has been heavily impacted with the advancement in technology and for someone with a passion for oral and craniofacial rehabilitation, the opportunity to learn from the best in the world could not be missed. After 10 years in private practice, he decided to further his studies at the University of the Witwatersrand, enrolling for a master’s degree in Prosthodontics under the care of Professor Dale Howes (current HOD Oral Rehabilitation, University of Sydney, Australia) and now retired, Emeritus Professor Peter Owen. His dedication and passion did not go unnoticed and even while still busy with his master’s degree, was accepted as a registrar in the field of Maxillofacial Prosthodontics where he embarked on a 4-year full-time specialist program. In 2020 Dr Schoeman successfully graduated as a specialist Prosthodontist with a distinction in his academic and practical course work and decided to return to the beautiful town of Stellenbosch where it all started 20 years ago.
“The road up to now has been challenging but was made worthwhile by my beautiful and supportive wife, An-Suzanne, beside me and those two little rascals who keeps me on my toes! The recent addition of baby girl has got my glass spilling over with blessings and I am proud to say that my family is my first priority”.
When it comes to my other passion, dentistry, I aim to have an impact in every patient life who walks into my office. “God has been graceful to me – All I need is the opportunity to give something back”.
