Suvarna Indermun is a lecturer and supervisor in the Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Radiology. She qualified as a dentist in 2015. She was always passionate about radiology during her undergraduate training and immediately after her Community Service year, she joined the Department in 2017. She obtained a postgraduate dentistry diploma (PDD) in Diagnostics and Radiology at UWC and graduated Cum Laude in April 2019. She graduated with her Masters in the same field in April 2022. Apart from the prescribed coursework, she has been involved in the clinical training and teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate students and developing the skills to write radiological reports of suspected maxillofacial lesions – on conventional radiography and CBCT. She is a keen researcher, dabbling in a few areas of research. Whilst she has been interested in radiology, her research areas also exist outside the walls of her department and include the following: diagnostics and oral pathology, teaching and learning in dentistry, social media in dentistry, 3D printing, 3D imaging in orthodontics, cephalometric analysis, artificial intelligence in dentistry and oral health education. She is also the secretary for the South African Division of the International Association of Dental Research.

Marietjie has transitioned from a 20-year career as practicing attorney in health law and biotechnology to academia focussing on interdisciplinary research in the intersection between science, technology, law, and ethics. She holds the degrees of BProc, LLB, LLM (Intellectual Property Law) and a PhD (Biotechnology Law). Her research interests include the regulation and ethics involved in advanced medical products such as gene therapies, gene and stem cell research, the use of big (geospatial) data in the context of health emergencies and pandemics, Digital Health technologies - in particular with regards to implanted devices such as Brain Computer Interfaces and their impact on fundamental rights, including online behavioural manipulation and how it shapes debates around digital ethics and its push towards digital constitutionalism. Marietjie published widely on these topics, both nationally and internationally, and serves as co-editor for the special edition on Digital Ethics for the Humanities and Social Sciences Communications Journal (Springer Nature). She is an elected member of ASSAf involved with the second consensus study on gene therapies in South Africa, and one of the invited experts and co-authors of the SA Country Reports on COVID-19 in which she addressed various legal issues with regards to pandemic management. In her free time Marietjie collaborates with artists and scientists to create comics which she uses to teach and stimulate debate around biotechnology and digital ethics.

    Niel Barnard, currently I am a full-time maxillofacial and oral surgeon at Louis Leipoldt Mediclinic. Before entering private practice, I was a full-time consultant for 3 years at the University of the Western Cape.
    I obtained my dental degree at Stellenbosch University/UWC in 2006, and my medical degree at Stellenbosch University in 2013. I then completed my MCHD in Maxillofacial and oral surgery at UWC in 2018.
    When I am not working, I enjoy flying fixed-wing airplanes and I recently discovered snow skiing.

    Marietjie Botes

    Marietjie has transitioned from a 20-year career as a practicing attorney in health law and biotechnology to academia focusing on interdisciplinary research at the intersection of science, technology, law, and ethics. She holds the degrees of BProc, LLB, LLM (Intellectual Property Law), and a LLD (Biotechnology Law). Her research interests include the regulation of regenerative medicines (gene therapies and stem cell research), Health Data Governance, pandemic preparedness, digital health technologies, in particular with regard to neuro-technologies such as Brain-Computer Interfaces and their impact on fundamental rights, including online behavioural manipulation and how it shapes debates around digital constitutionalism. Marietjie published widely on these topics, both nationally and internationally, and served as co-editor for the special edition on Digital Ethics for the Humanities and Social Sciences Communications Journal (Springer Nature). She is an elected member of ASSAf involved with the second consensus study on gene therapies in South Africa, and one of the invited experts and co-authors of the SA Country Reports on COVID-19 in which she addressed various legal issues regarding pandemic management.
    As legal designer Marietjie also creates comics about biomedical and digital ethics to create awareness and stimulate debate among a wide variety of people - and in her free time she plays the flute.

  • Jonathan Du Toit

    Jonathan Du Toit

    Dr Jonathan Du Toit completed his dentistry studies at UWC, followed by a postgraduate
    diploma in oral surgery from the College of Maxillofacial and Surgeons of South Africa, a
    diploma in implantology from the Implant and Aesthetic Academy/University of Frankfurt,
    and a Master’s degree from Wits. Dr Du Toit completed his specialist training at the
    University of Pretoria in periodontics and oral medicine, whilst at the same time completing
    a PhD from Szeged University in Hungary. Dr Du Toit is the first in 10 yrs to earn a
    Fellowship in Oral Medicine and Periodontology from the College of Dentistry of South
    Africa. He is the past SASPIO vice president and past council member for the College of
    Dentistry of South Africa. Dr Du Toit has to date published 33 peer-reviewed journal
    publications, and 4 textbook chapters. Being active in research, Dr Du Toit has published in,
    reviews for, or is on the editorial board for The International Journal of Esthetic Dentistry,
    Clinical Implant Dentistry and Related Research, Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry, Journal of
    Oral Implantology, to name a few. Dr Du Toit has had frequent lecture invitations, both local
    and international. He is in private practice at the Netcare Christiaan Barnard Hospital in
    Cape Town, and is director of the NEXUS Dental community.

    Adnill Kock

    Dr Adnill Kock is a dentist practicing in private practice in Cape Town. He graduated from the University of the Western Cape in 2018 and completed his community service in Mandeni, KZN in 2019.
    He then pursued a post-graduate diploma in implantology at UWC which he completed in 2021. He has been a practice owner since 2020 and practices general dentistry at his practice, with a special interest in endodontics and biomimetic restorative dentistry. He is also currently solely practising endodontic treatment at Matrix Dental Specialists and Smith and van Lierop Advanced Dentistry.
    Dr Kock regularly attends continuous education events, courses and lectures. He is a member of SAAAD, ITI, Ripe Global and is the co-host of the Dental Tutors podcast. Dr Kock is married and can regularly be found in his garden with his 3 dogs.

    Current position: Senior Lecturer – Division Paediatric Dentistry, Department of Orthodontics. BDS V Final Year Programme Coordinator. Involved in both Undergraduate and Postgraduate training in Paediatric Dentistry.
