LECTURE OUTLINE:

There have been substantial developments within dental trauma that guide management of the emergency visit following a traumatic dental injury. This talk will highlight the essential role of the dental team in communicating with the patient and their parents and managing specific injuries. Good decision making is essential both at the emergency visit and at subsequent recall visits to maximise successful outcomes. Current and updated knowledge on the management of traumatic dental injuries, both in acute situations and in the long-term follow-on care for the child will be discussed and illustrated using cases with practical advice for the entire dental team.


ABOUT THE PRESENTER:

Anne O'Connell is Professor/Consultant in Paediatric Dentistry in Trinity College Dublin and in The National Children's Hospital. She a Board-certified Paediatric Dentist and a Fellow of TCD, AAPD and IADT. She trained at the Eastman Dental Centre with a further degree in Cariology from the University of Rochester, New York, USA. She held faculty positions in Eastman, the University of Maryland and the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research. Anne is an active clinician with special interests in traumatic oral injuries, infant oral health and developmental defects of the dentition. She is an active researcher and has published numerous academic papers and book chapters, as well as contributing to international guidelines and expert panels. She continues to be active in many professional organisations and is Past President of the International Association of Dental Traumatology, on the Scientific Committee of AAPD, Education committee and Section Head for the IAPD Fellowship examination and serves on many editorial boards. Anne has 3 adult children, loves to travel and explore new cultures as well as being active outdoors.
